Art League RI is excited to announce the newest exhibition of The Synergy Project at URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography: The Synergy Project: A Collaboration of Art and Science. We began The Synergy Project in 2020 as a new iteration of Synergy, a similar art and science exhibition initiative. The Synergy Project pairs artists across many mediums with scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and now the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography (URI GSO). With this project, we aim to communicate oceanographic research to wider audiences through art exhibits and events. 

At this new exhibit, you will see work from returning artists and scientists with The Synergy Project, and also new work exploring new topics. The art pictured here is a collaboration between Betsy Ritz and Colette Kelly, Ph.D, called “Cyclonic Flux.” This sculpture depicts the release of nitrous oxide into the atmosphere from cyclones that form over the Southern Ocean, surrounding Antarctica. You will be able to read statements from both the artist and scientist(s) involved in each piece, learning about their processes and research.
